3 miles across the sea
the sun rises
over the curves
of the landscape
3 miles separate me
from a life worlds from this one
the busy life of the city there
the quiet and rural island life here
I wake and hear the birds
silence surrounding their songs
yet there’s a whisper
of small waves on a rocky shore
3 miles away are traffic jams
leashes, condos, and McDonald’s
here on the island are empty roads
freedom, open spaces, and freshness
The morning sun shines
warming the faces of the houses
scattered haphazardly
their gaze to the sea
They’re not lined in neat rows
to force order in the chaos
the nature
that is the world’s true form
It is that wild nature
that calls to me
to the island
3 miles across the sea
